NWH's Breast Institute Helps Area Woman In Her Second Fight Against Cancer

Going through a single traumatic breast cancer experience could push any woman to her physical and emotional limits, but when Eileen, a Connecticut resident, was forced to undergo breast cancer treatment for the second time, she turned to the experts at Northern Westchester Hospital for strength and a cure.

"I went through a series of consultations with several different doctors in my area, and it just wasn't the right fit," she said. After coming across Dr. Julie Vasile and NWH's state-of-the-art Breast Institute through a family recommendation, Eileen immediately knew she was in the best hands.

"Because Dr. Vasile is as thorough as she is, she ordered a number of tests and cancer showed up in the opposite breast during an MRI," said Eileen. After undergoing what's known as the DIEP Flap procedure to remove the breast cancer, she was able to return to living her everyday life sooner than she ever dreamed possible.

Through the innovative reconstructive surgery, Vasile and the NWH team are able to use fatty tissue from elsewhere on a patient's body to help restore natural breast shape and size. And since no muscle is used, most women recover quickly and have a lower risk of losing abdominal strength.

"I can't say enough about Dr. Vasile, she was just a godsend," said Eileen. "The nursing staff was phenomenal, and my stay was phenomenal. I can honestly say Northern Westchester Hospital is the place for me."
